35 It was in New York that the elder Eslanda studied osteopathy and opened her own practice, where she had wealthy clients like Mrs. Joseph Pulitzer. 36 Essie was a bright youngster and graduated from high school in 1914 after only three years. She placed third in a statewide competitive exam and won a scholarship to attend the University of Illinois. There she registered to major in domestic science, probably because it was unusual for a black woman to major in chemistry at that time. She later discovered that it was the science part of domestic science that she liked.

She attended the de facto segregated all-black schools of East St. Louis. 25 Her choice of where to go to college was made by her mother, an alumna of Tuskegee Institute. 26 At Tuskegee, she majored in home economics with a minor in nutrition and chemistry. She later recalled, “I knew from the first day that I had no interest in dietetics. ”27 Hoover received a BS degree with high honor 52 | AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN CHEMISTS from Tuskegee Institute in 1946. She remained at Tuskegee to pursue a master’s degree after being awarded a Carver Foundation Fellowship sponsored by the Swift Meat Packing Company.
