To complicate matters further, people keep changing religiously as they borrow ideas and practices from members of other religions and so form new combinations. All of these boundaries and boundary-crossings are social: they concern problems about the relationships among people in ordinary life. In contrast, the boundaries of extraordinary religion go beyond social arrangements: they present people with the goal of crossing into a sacred and otherworldly domain. Thus, the quarrel over boundaries between the many religions and the one religion helps us especially to understand what is American about American religion.

All events—both what nonIndians might call legendary and what they might call historical—have been considered sacred. For example, when Edmund Nequatewa, a twentieth-century Hopi, attempted to describe Hopi truth for outsiders (in his book Truth of a Hopi), he began with Birdmen in the original Hopi underworld and included the twentieth-century founding of the village of Hotevilla. Traditional account and recent event were collapsed because, just as Indian space existed as one whole, so, too, did Indian time.

It may therefore be more fruitful to think not of defining religion but, instead, of trying to describe it. To describe something is to say what it generally looks like and how it usually works. It is not to say what its innermost realities are, and it is not to say definitely what separates these realities from every other object in the world. Still, describing a thing can tell us much about what it is. Looking at the past and present appearances of religion can tell us what functions and forms go along with it.
